TThe siege marked a pivotal moment in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Ill-prepared for prolonged resistance, Company troops and civilians at Cawnpore surrendered to forces led by Nana Sahib after assurances of safe passage to Allahabad. The evacuation collapsed into massacre, with most European men killed. As a relief column of the East India Company advanced, around 120 captive women and children were murdered in the Bibighar Massacre. The atrocity provoked brutal reprisals and cemented the slogan “Remember Cawnpore!”
