The author went out to South Africa with the 94th Regiment in the aftermath of the battle of Isandhlwana. His reminiscences include descriptions of Natal, life on the march and in camp, the accounts of survivors of encounters with the Zulus, the death of the Prince Imperial, and brief account of the battle of Ulundi, and a description of a visit to the battlefield of Isandhlwana, still strewn with the wreckage of the battle.
