Gerhard Koop offers a clear account of the design, construction, and service of Germany’s interwar light cruisers, from Emden to Nürnberg. Intended primarily for commerce raiding, they saw limited use in that role, instead supporting operations in the Baltic and North Sea. Two were lost in the 1940 Norway campaign; the remainder survived most of the war.
