10th Infantry Division Band Photo Archive, Circa 1949-1952.

This archive consists of photographs and letters collected by Cpl. John P. Papp during and after his service as a member of the 10th Infantry Division Band from 1949 to 1952. Included are 66 mostly black and white photos (mostly 5x7, with a few 8x10 and 4x6) that are mostly of band members in military uniform. Other images include members in civilian dress, playing instruments, and with their (presumed personal) late 40s/early 50s cars. Four photos are dated 1971, 1974 and 1982 and depict images of the same army barracks and grounds as they continue to decay and are torn down. Most of the photographs are labeled or have the soldiers' last names neatly penned by each person pictured. Included are two handwritten letters from two different soldiers both in postmarked envelopes dated May 3, 1952 from Kumhwha, Korea. One is a two-sided one-page letter the other is three pages, one-sided. Topics discussed include writing while in combat, girls, and the "big guns" interrupting band practice. Also included is a 1995 thank you card signed by "all the gang" of the 10th Division Band at its May 20, 1995 reunion. Envelope for this card also contains several photographs from the reunion and a paper photocopy blowup of a reunion group shot labeled with peoples' names. During the Korean War, Ft. Riley was home to the 10th Infantry Division and was where many new recruits trained before being sent to combat.
